Atlanta , U.S. , HIV transmission
can be prevented . The use of condoms during sex quite effectively prevent the
risk virus transfer . But for people who are at risk , the CDC says it needs
additional ways .
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention U.S. , the people
who are considered at risk include:
- Couples who like to have sex without a condom
- Not have HIV but have intercourse with HIV
- Homosexual or bisexual men who have ever suffered from certain sexually
transmitted diseases within the last six months and is not only associated with
one person only
- Heterosexual man or woman who does not always wear a condom when having sex
with someone who actually at risk , and always changing partners
- People who ever shared drug paraphernalia such as by injection .
that’s why, it publishes new guidelines to prevent people who are at risk in
order to avoid them to be actually infected with HIV . The trick is to get them
to consume drugs which belonging to the PrEP ( pre - exposure prophylaxis )
each day .
A number of studies also have shown that this method can reduce the rate of
infection in people at risk by more than 90 percent , especially if taken every
day regularly.
" Maybe one day there is no vaccine or other medication that will stop the
HIV epidemic , but at least PrEP could be a powerful medicine and has potential
to reduce the HIV epidemic in the U.S. today, " said Dr. Jonathan Mermin ,
director of the National Center for HIV - AIDS , Viral Hepatitis , STD and TB
Prevention , CDC , as quoted by CNN , Saturday ( 05/17/2014 ) .
However, the only drug that can meet the criteria of PrEP is Truvada . The drug
is approved for use by the FDA in 2012, is a combination of two antiretroviral
drugs to prevent HIV .
The problem , Truvada is not a cheap drug . Truvada consumption within a month
can cost ranges between 1300-1700 U.S. dollars ( approximately USD 15-19
million ) . However, these costs are being sought in order to covered by
insurance .
the immunology Experts are concerned about the of HIV - AIDS , Dr. Anthony
Fauci says that this is an effective way to prevent the spread of AIDS viruses.
" The benefit is not only for patients at risk of HIV , but also help
reduce new HIV infections across the United States. And also , this drug should
be taken with the use of condoms , and not merely replacing a condom , "
said the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,
